As the final year of the war began, the 1st Guards Tank Army was in central Poland getting ready for the Soviet drive into the heart of Germany. Breaking out from the Vistula River bridgehead, the 1st Guards Tank Brigade was driving hard for the Warta River when the 19th Panzer Division attempted to halt the Soviets in a series of counterattacks.
